I teach 4th grade math, and many of my students struggle with the more abstract concepts like comparing to benchmark fractions without using a picture, place value, and converting measurements. Students relate back to their previous learning and remember more if their entire body was involved - such as when using manipulatives or they are working with teams and talking out answers before answering in a game show format. By using these manipulatives, my students will be able to drive their own learning, making it more concrete and relevant to their lives. Students will be able to explore without penalty, try out new strategies, and "fail forward" by learning from their mistakes! Manipulatives and games lead to a risk-free learning environment that will make math accessible to all, and fun for all!
