In our classrooms, children aren’t just students. Throughout the year they may be cartographers, graphic novelists, or environmental scientists. Every spring, they turn into movie producers, and they need your help! Authentic learning experiences depend on authentic theater technology like the green screen. We hope this project will allow us to purchase a green screen, the supports for the screen, lights, and an iPad tripod. Our classrooms teach through Project-Based Learning, where students learn information from all four subjects through a series of inter-disciplinary projects. To learn about the Civil War, students write, direct, and produce time-travel Civil War movies. After learning history, science, reading and math content throughout their script development, the real fun begins. Students will use the green screen to film their moving models of famous Civil War Battles. The green-screen technology will allow them to edit out strings or hands and add in battle scene backgrounds, making their models look more realistic. Students can add important famous people into their scenes by using Civil War era photographs and green screen technology. When students are script-writing, they are tasked with developing a time-travel method. Many of their ideas depend on green-screen technology to demonstrate the movement through time. Having green-screen technology will allow them to include each of these aspects in their films. The movies our students make do not stay in our classroom. We partner with the local community movie theater and host a “red carpet” screening for the students, their families, and other community members. In previous years, shaky film quality from handheld cameras on a full-sized theater screen has had a "seasick"effect. Using a tripod will eliminate the shaky effect. Both a tripod and green-screen technology will allow us to show the world a higher-quality product of which the students can be proud.
