The rat specimens will be dissected during our unit covering the human body systems. Students will be taught all 11 systems and how they interact to maintain life of an organism. The rat is a mammal that has internal organs that are very similar in layout of the human body. As they explore the anatomy of the rat, I will help them to see the connections to the human body. It is amazing to see how the students react when they they hold the dissecting instruments and begin to observe and even feel the organs on their lab tables. At the beginning of the year, I share an overview of topics we will be covering during the year, and students always ask about dissection. It is something they have heard about, or seen on television, and it's an experience they long to have. As a freshmen biology student, an AP biology student and then as a Biology major, I fondly remember each of my dissection experiences and how they shaped my desire to teach and help others. So every year, I ensure that every group and every specimen is properly dissected and students are challenged and succeed at learning proper dissection techniques. It is my hope that this exposure will foster curiosity and instill confidence that they are future doctors and problem solvers.
