Every quarter, I require my students to set a reading goal, and then read independently to meet that goal. Many of my students are reluctant readers, and don't look kindly on this project. I have found this year, however, that I can entice these reluctant readers to read by giving them graphic novels. I have five different graphic novels on my classroom shelves, and they are always checked out. I want my students to love reading. In order to get my students interested in other writing, I want to meet them where they're at, and offer them a diverse selection of graphic novels. Mixing text with illustration is a lot less intimidating to these reluctant readers. With graphic novels as the hook, I hope to get my students reading more and more every day.
