Since I completed the ARTeacher fellowship at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, I have been engaging students in creating artwork to represent complex ideas in the classroom. Students make three mixed media collages throughout the year over the topics of American values, social issues, and world religions. Each project includes a written explanation, or artists statement, and an oral presentation. Without the proper supplies, I will have to abandon these projects. Through the creation of art, I have seen students who are not typically engaged come to life in the classroom. I have also seen students challenged to extend their thinking to a deeper level. In my first year of the arts integration fellowship, I only piloted with one class. I quickly saw that attendance and engagement was higher and I adopted it in all five of my class periods.
