I would like to use the book, The Refugee by Alan Gratz, to help my students embrace the challenges faced by other youth from the past and the present. This book is about 3 different child refugees and is told from their perspectives. I am planning on incorporating many different core standards during this literature unit including the historical moments this book represents. Having a classroom set of these books means that we will be able to have rich discussions as a class and allow a variety of responses. Each child's life experiences and background knowledge is so different and this particular book will help my student's express themselves and their diversity. This in turn will help improve their literacy and love for reading.
