I started the flexible seating campaign in September of 2017. I created a culture within the classroom the students loved. I had prior students who I have had through the years come back and tell me they wanted to retake my class because of all the cool changes I made. The students enjoy being able to move around the classroom without constraints. They enjoy that the furniture is movable and that the classroom looks eclectic. I have enjoyed teaching this way because I am not confined to a specific space. I can enjoy the classroom as much as the students do. The classroom now reflects my personality and my teaching style. Like many things, some of the items this year have seen better days. I am looking for replacement items for some of the furniture in my classroom for next school year. The beanbags allow the students to move around during independent work times and stay comfortable. I have found students enjoy sitting on the floor while working. This past year, the students used stools as desks. I believe the portable lap desks will benefit them when they want to sit on the floor to work. Two of the tables in the classroom have seen better days. I am requesting to additional black tables to replace the worn out ones for two reasons: the students are less likely to doodle on a black table and the tables have the option of being folded up if we need additional space. The entire classroom is functional in a movable way. Nothing constrains the students and that is one of the most important aspects to me. The classroom should reflect societal norms and flexible seating does that.
