Students in my class are struggling with the basics of computing and keyboarding skills that are an integral part of our Digital Information Technology Curriculum. Why? It starts with ergonomics.
Ergonomics is defined as, "The applied science of equipment design, as for the workplace, intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort." - The American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary.
Based on this definition, my students are already at a disadvantage. They are mastering touch typing keyboarding skills along with college and career computer skills and lack chairs that can adjust to their specific keyboarding needs. One of my freshman students cannot reach the keyboard and as a result, ends up sitting on his bookbag to try and create a better reach.
The ability to adjust their seating position is a vital part of developing proper posture and for effective computing habits. Improper posture can lead to health issues such as a stiff neck, sore shoulders, and wrist fatigue. Healthy computer habits reduce the risk of injury and adjustable chairs will facilitate the reduction of these risks.
Donations to this project will help my students reach their full potential in their keyboarding and computing skills throughout the year. This would create an ergonomic environment that reduces the health risks associated with incorrect ergonomics and promotes increased STEM learning.
