Our district strives to keep technology as up-to-date as possible, but we share resources. Students are asked to have calculators for class, but many parents ask the students to use their cell phones as a calculator. This isn't beneficial to the students on class or state testing. Students have a basic four-function calculator they can borrow that I bought from the dollar store. Pre-algebra students need calculators and a pocket chart that can calculate exponents and square or cube roots.
The calculators I am asking for are allowed on state tests and provide the functions that are needed in pre-algebra class. Students use calculators in math on a regular basis. We spend an entire unit on exponents and our current calculators would require much more work than these new ones. We also study the Pythagorean Theorem and square root keys will come in handy, to say the least.
When schools invest in technology, they put money into Smart boards, computers, laptops, tablets and system upgrades. Our district needs these resources, as well, especially with a transition to online state testing. Calculators are at the bottom of the order list and budgets only go so far. Your donation of a calculator will help my students this year and for many years to come. Your donation is appreciated and we thank you for it.
