My students need an opportunity to participate in a 70 cow-eye dissection to blend all units that they have learned in science this year into one end-of-the year activity. We also need gloves, goggles and 12 surgical scissors plus 12 dissection pans. My students need an activity that will allow them to fully immerse in something scientific. Over the course of the school year my students grow in their scientific knowledge. As I watch them engage in class they become more eager to know things and challenge themselves to something new and engaging. At the end of the year after all of their big tests I would like to challenge my students to experience something that they would probably not get the chance to experience until high school or even college.
Being able to dissect a cow's eye would be an eye-mazing experience for my students. My students will be able to fully engage in activity that incorporates many units that they would have learned throughout the year such as lab safety, animal adaptations, and even light energy as it relates to our eyes! Dissecting a cow's eye will allow me to utilize an inquiry based approach as students will be able to "take a look" at what is going on before discussion. Being able to take a part in this experience will allow my students to gain a head start for other science classes throughout middle school and high school which will allow all of the to go "to and through college."
