I teach at an amazing urban charter school in California. My students come from low-income households, but are determined to be successful students in high school and beyond. Many of my students begin 9th grade with poor reading and writing skills, but through their own hard work, and the hard work of a dedicated school staff, these students advance leaps and bounds. Last year, over 60% of the 11th grade class scored proficient or advanced on the state tests in history, and 10 students passed the AP US history exam!
