I am a social studies teacher, but I am also a literacy teacher. Many of my freshmen enter the classroom reading at a sixth grade level, and at least 85% qualify for free and reduced lunch. Their lives outside the school might be chaotic, but they come to school wanting to learn. I teach in a public, neighborhood school in a city that is quickly privatizing education. My school as a long history with the neighborhood, and my students chose to come here, even though they were faced with many options such as charter schools and other neighborhood schools. The majority of my students are Latino, and studying events in Latin American has a special meaning for them. They feel ownership of this history. I want my students to learn about people like them resisting injustice and develop a sense of solidarity with people from around the world and throughout history. Most importantly, I want my students to feel less isolated and believe that change is possible.
