I am lucky to teach in the only fully inclusive school for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. This means my 10th grade ELA class includes almost 60% students with diverse learning needs. Many of my students need to use technology to be able to access the same materials as their peers. Our urban, public school is lucky to have access to Chromebooks through our library; however, due to the needs of our population, there isn't enough technology to go around. Having a class set of laptops would ensure that my students are allotted their specific accommodations every day, and no one will fall behind because of lack of resources. My ELA class utilizes technology every day for researching, writing and reading. Many of my students need access to audiobooks online, and many need the services of a word processor to complete writing assignments. I also emphasize with my tenth graders the appropriate use of technology, and its power to encourage innovation and creativity. Technology is pivotal not only to my curriculum but also to my students' well-being. They are young members of an ever changing society, and it is up to me as their teacher to help them innovate and learn with society in positive ways. Technology is a bridge to those innovations. Having these Chromebooks would ensure that my students have the opportunity to participate in their changing society in effective ways.
