My project Wii Work - Wii Talk - Wii Motivate - Wii Change will provide students with fun, interactive, engaging strategies to work through social/emotional problems and improve academic performance by building resiliency in students through game play and counseling support. When students are stressed or need to calm down they can play games on the Wii and learn how to regulate their emotions. By having a Wii in the School Counseling office I can use it to motivate children and help them learn about taking turns, being a good friend, good sportsmanship, regulating emotions and playing fair with the Mario Kart driving and Wii Vacation games. Consider the "typical" counseling session of sitting and talking; how engaged might a student be in that situations? Now imagine playing a game of bowling on the Wii. Children immediately are engaged and find it easier to talk while playing; versus just sitting and talking to an adult. Students can relax doing Wii yoga, release angry tension playing tennis, learn to focus and follow directions while playing Mario Karts and practice teamwork and healthy coping skills playing interactive games. Students even can be rewarded with a game involving activity for meeting their personal goals! The projector will allow me to shin the Wii games on my office wall making the interactive learning accessible and captivating. Each of these experiences with the Wii and accessories can help students in their social emotional lives directly improving and supporting their academic experiences. If a student is too anxious, or stressed, or angry to concentrate in class then their academics suffer. By using the Will games to help students learn ways to regulate their emotions and deal with difficulties students can better focus on their academics day to day.
