Students are studying world geography and world cultures in my 7th grade Social Studies classes. Teaching about movement between areas and the reasons why, using a novel for teens like Refugee will be a rich, relevant, accessible and meaningful way to enhance literacy and make the lessons about geography so much more meaningful to my students. Additionally, access to a laptop that I can connect to a projector to show students photos, landscapes, maps (I have no maps in my Social Studies classroom from which to teach!) will allow me to bring the global world to my students own lives. Visuals, literature and relevance to students own lives and the world around them will all richly enhance student learning!
