I am trying to create life-long lovers of books. That is a difficult task for any teacher, but when class sets are limited to older books that many kids can't relate to, the struggle becomes greater. The book Wonder is a wonder and anyone who has read it loves it. I have shared it as a read-aloud with three classes, and each one begged for extra pages every day. The themes touched upon - bullying and friendship, family and friends, and general acceptance - are ones that every student can relate to in some way, but they way they are portrayed in this amazing story can be truly eye-opening for kids who are taking steps towards the difficult teen years and are already sensing some of those insecurities. I am asking for a class set, twenty copies of this book, to start a literature text set collection, but more than that, I plan make it the keystone of my reading program. It will be a tool to teach character, plot, and some amazing themes. Please help me get there!
