Imagine this: the gym walls are adorned with the infamous Olympic rings, flags from various countries hang all around, the Olympic theme song is playing and the parade carrying the torch has just entered the classroom. As described above, I thoughtfully choose an Olympic theme for our first year because the Olympic games foster sportsmanship, cooperation, dedication, and perseverance. My students will learn about these important character traits as they are physically challenged in multiple Olympic events! Students are broken into teams and assigned a country that they will compete for. Being a brand new school, our equipment is limited and though we have been creative in how to recreate swimming relays and several track and field events, I hope to receive equipment that will allow me to add new events to our Olympic rotation. With the help of this grant, my students will be able to experience basketball, soccer, gymnastics, archery, track and field and swimming events. My students are highly motivated by competition, but as is true of the actual Olympic games, we hope their experiences extend far beyond the sport being played or score of the game. They will have much needed opportunities to practice showing good sportsmanship and have chances to cooperate in ways that aren't common in the traditional classroom. The goal of the Olympics is to build a peaceful and better world through sport. I believe in this goal and want to share it's power with my students. With the gift of additional equipment, I can build a unit that will impact each of my students, well beyond my gym walls and long after they are out of elementary school. Thank you for making this possible!
