Many of my special needs students need some sort of sensory input during the day. This usually includes running, jumping, screaming, and doing silly dances. None of these is very conducive for a learning environment. The use of these tools will allow my kids to calm their bodies, so they will have a better chance of focusing and accessing the general education curriculum. The weighted belts, pad pads, and vests are like big hugs, this sensory input is vital. Once their sensory needs are met, students are then able to calmly sit for an extended period-which is imperative for group and individual learning. The chewy toys and light lamps helps do this at a larger scale and can be used for all students who have varying sensory needs. No one child is alike. Many of the typically developing students are also in need of some fidget toys and lap pads to help them get the sensory input they need while still sitting through the circle-time story or during their literacy rotations.
