A mentor text is a published piece of writing a teacher uses during a reading or writing workshop to teach a specific reading or writing skill (all Common Core aligned). It is my mission to make sure my students leave my classroom with a love for books, a richer vocabulary, and a yearning to continue writing. By using these books, my students will not only have the opportunity to hear and see beautifully written texts, but they will also be learning how to improve their own writing. These fictional and non-fictional stories provide concrete, stellar examples of the skills they need to learn. These books will expose my students to a wealth of information in a hands-on and meaningful way. The texts we are using are rich with language, filled with inferential thinking, and examples of excellent writing! They have interesting beginnings and endings, they are alive with descriptive and figurative language, and they provide us with the opportunities to get a glimpse into a character's life, or a time in history, or a special place. They make us think!
