I would like to make math accessible to my special needs students! I would like to use the calculators to teach higher level math and the manipulatives to teach basic skills. For example, having calculators will allow my students to complete higher level math assignments, such as algebraic equations. Even though my students my not have a full grasp of math basics, such as multiplication and division, I am still required to teach grade level concepts. The students can focus on learning algebraic steps to solve problems instead of focusing on basic math skills. Math manipulatives allow my students to perceive mathematical concepts through a hands on experience. These concrete objects will assist the students' understanding of important math concepts, and help them transition from concrete thinking to abstract thinking.
