Throughout the year I want to be able to completely transform my classroom to have an exciting, inviting, and engaging atmosphere for the students to learn in. For this project, I want to transform my classroom into an Italian restaurant. This idea came to me after doing research about the Ron Clark Academy. I want to get my students excited about learning with real world problems, reading a menu. Sean Slade said, “Brain research suggests that fun is not just beneficial to learning, but by many reports, required for authentic learning and long-term memory.” In this classroom transformation, students will dress up like little chefs and enter a room that looks like an Italian restaurant. Each week they will have a skill from ELA to review while in the "restaurant", from fixing quotation marks to apostrophes, contractions, and possessive nouns using noodles. Learning these skills is crucial to being successful because students are required to write in every subject on the state standardized test. Because it’s such an important skill, I want to make sure they enjoy learning it. I will pass around menus with errors that they must identify and correct using noodles. They will glue the noodles, which are shaped like commas and periods, onto the menu using q-tips. I have included many different decorations so the students will have the complete feel of being in an Italian restaurant which is something many of these students have never experienced. I am also working towards having flex seating for every student. I have included one wobble chair in hopes that eventually I can have a room full. I have many upcoming classroom transformations, and I want every diverse learner to feel comfortable so they can actively participate.
