I work at a school where students do not view reading as a rewarding experience. I'm trying to use specific literature to help my students understand that reading can be both entertaining and useful to their lives. So far the projects that have been completed have helped my students to be more engaged by providing them with interesting materials that also have the capacity to show them worlds and environments that they have not encountered. My goal for the year is to help them see reading as something other than a chore, but also to help them learn about people who live very different lives than they do so that they can broaden the world view. This will help them to become better adults not only because of improved reading skills but because of their ability to function productive in a number of situations based on their gained knowledge of other cultures.
