First graders have wiggles and need to move. Research shows flexible seating options in the classroom improve cognitive function, academic achievement, and student engagement. I am requesting wobble cushions, stools, and standard floor cushions to address the movement needs of my students. I have adjusted the tables in my classroom to create standing areas, floor seats, and traditional chair seats. While these seating options will not teach a new skill directly to my students, it will allow them to focus better by addressing their needs. A wobble cushion is an unstable surface that accommodates a students need to move. The wobble cushions will allow resistance to rock back and forth plus cushion support for sitting at a floor level desk. I also want to provide a traditional cushion option for kids who do not want the added resistance when sitting. There are times in the days when students need to stand to learn. The stools will provide support when a student needs to switch between sitting and standing. "Simply put, we think better on our feet than in our seat."
