My school is an interurban school in Texas in an impoverished area. Although they face daily obstacles in their homes and neighborhoods, such as gang activity and drug use and abuse, they come to school excited about learning. They need hands on and real life experience. It means nothing to them to mention that a child is obese, but when you tell them they can help and make a difference, they are all in. They rise to challenges and exceed all expectations. My school was on the list a few years ago to be academically unacceptable, but because of this great group of kids and dedicated teachers and staff, we are now a recognized campus. If we continue implementing positive projects in classrooms we can really impact the learning of these students. These are their formidable years, and with this population, many drop out and become statistics, but through project based learning, we can instill a love for learning and help students to open their minds and go further than they ever dreamed!
