My students are 5th graders in the bilingual track, ages 9-12. The significant age-range is due to when the families immigrated and started their children in school. The students have received primary instruction in Spanish through 4th grade, and they face a tough transition into English in 5th grade, the last year before middle school and the first year to be tested in English. At the beginning of the year, they average a low 2nd grade reading level in English. We focus tirelessly on intensive language skills, fluency, and general reading comprehension, working hard to dramatically grow language and reading level in one year. My school is a Title 1 school in an low-income neighborhood. The students are lacking many of the opportunities that enrich their lives and brains, such as fine arts, accessible public libraries, and other enrichment programs. We are working hard to advocate for them.
