My kids love art and they love making things that they can take home. My students are in a detention facility and their situation creates a toll on their mental health. ART gives them a release to process their feelings. I try to give them projects that they will be successful at to build their self-esteem and creativity. The students will be introduced to contemporary African American artist that incorporate social justice into their work. Each student will create their own t-shirt design reflecting an African American contemporary artist and a social justice they want to portray. The students will use bleach to lighten up some of the shirts and then use the fabric paint on it to add details. Fine details will be added with fabric markers if needed. The students will not be able to wear them while in the facility but will be able to take them with them when they are released.
