My school currently has no text book for science or social studies. We have to find worksheets, activities, or any supplemental material we can to teach these subjects to our students. I am requesting Time for Kids magazines to help solve this issue. Time for Kids sends monthly magazines with four issues per month. Time provides students with relevant, and current informational texts. Students are then able to practice important reading skills while learning about current events. This is more beneficial to their learning than hearing me read from a book and handing them a worksheet. I am also asking for a class set of dry erase boards. I have a rather large class size of 25 students. It can be a challenge to keep all students engaged and active in their learning during whole group lessons. Not only are class sizes large, but there are also behavior issues, and students learning best in different ways and at different paces. During our math lessons, students still use the extra space in their workbooks to draw pictures or number lines to help them add or subtract. They are asked to follow along in their workbooks as I teach. If students had these boards at their desk, they could stay more focused and follow along with my modeling. During our reading lesson is where I see the most lack of focus. Some phonics skills are hard to grasp without a lot of practice. When we are working on contractions or breaking apart syllables, students would benefit from being able to sit in their seats and practice writing along with me. They would also be used during our small daily five reading groups. Students would use them at the spelling center to practice their words.
