The library has become a fledgling makerspace this year, but the library budget only has a small allotment for books. So far this year, I have done low-tech makerspace projects with low-cost and recycled materials and the students loved it! They want more and I want them to have it. Although they are in 6th to 8th grade they have not had many hands-on project experiences. When we did our first project with straws, most of the students shared that they had never done anything like it before. There was no makerspace activities in their elementary schools and I would like them to have many opportunities at S.T.E.A.M. based education before they leave middle school.
