Young children are sponges. They come to life with the use of technological tools. They easily soak up new technologies as quickly as toddlers develop language skills. Their interest is high and not afraid to take risks. When the question, "What purpose would Chromebooks serve in a first grade classroom?” is asked, the answer is easy. They’ll use it as another tool for learning. Today, educators are defining 21st century learning as collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Having Chromebooks in my classroom will allow me to more frequently work on those skills with my students. We will work on word processing even before they can read a full paragraph! Students will learn the skill of digital storytelling by retelling stories and recording their own voice. We will practice basic keyboarding skills, listen to stories in listening centers, and research projects on habitats, communities, and American symbols - all of which correspond with our first grade curriculum. Having Chromebooks in my classroom will not only teach students how to safely navigate the internet, but it will also remind students that learning can be fun and furthermore, encourage a deep love for learning in each student.
