Building classroom community is essential for school success. Creating an environment where all students feel safe, valued and a have a sense of belonging is a priority in my classroom. Large group instruction takes place on the rug where students are introduced to reading and language strategies, math concepts, as well as social studies, science and health lessons. However, when we are “snug on the rug,” there just isn't enough room! Five year old children struggle with personal space and boundaries so it is something we work on all year. This group rug has specifically designated colored squares that will allow the children in my classroom to find their own defined personal space. Having their own space provides a measure of safety, a sense of value and belonging during the large group learning instruction. The colored squares on the rug are perfect visuals for my students, especially my children with special needs that struggle with personal space boundaries. This will remove the distraction and discomfort of too little space while allowing all the students in my classroom to attend to instruction to the best of their ability.
