Students complete an independent reading project twice a year. They read a novel and then write an essay and prepare a presentation to share with their classmates. To give students with special needs greater access to this project we are reading Animal Farm by Orwell in our RSP lab so that we can have a rich discussion before students are expected to complete the writing and presentation portion of this assignment. This group-read scaffold will allow students with disabilities a better opportunity to succeed on this assignment. We will read in chunks, annotate as we read, and dive into the text in a way that students would not if they were expected to read this text on their own.
