My classroom is a fully departmentalized 5th grade science class. Nearly all of the school's 5th graders come through my doors. Everyone of them is given the opportunity to develop life long learning skills that will take them beyond the classroom. Inquiry based learning is the foundation of our learning. The children practice discovering the causes of effects on their own. The students use argument driven inquiry (ADI), document based questioning (DBQ), Socratic seminars, and hands on activities that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). I regularly utilize technology for digital simulations, virtual labs, researching topics, and collaborative learning. Last year they designed water bottle rockets, recorded their launches, and then shared the launches with their design. Students from other classes could see how they performed, and suggest revisions or borrow ideas.
