This year I am teaching rocks to all 5 of our second grade classes at our school. The rock kit will make a difference in not only my own classes learning of rocks, but for all 113 of our second graders. I believe that the best way to learn science is hands-on. If our second graders are able to touch and hold real rocks rather than looking at pictures of them, they will be more engaged and interested in the subject. They will be able to see the differences between the rocks and sort them based on different characteristics. With the kit, each student will be able to hold an example of a sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rock and their understanding of each will increase dramatically. I also believe the addition of wiggle cushions for my students with attention difficulties will help them engage in every lesson throughout the day.
A focus of mine with second graders, is to teach them important life skills and good character traits. With each book that I carefully selected, I will be able to teach my students about important traits that make good citizens. With these resources, my students will learn to be more respectful and caring in their interactions with others. I also selected several books that can be used as mentor texts for our opinion writing unit. In second grade we focus a lot on persuasive writing; being able to see real examples of it, will help my students in their own writing.
