As I said before, I do not believe that students living in poverty or learning a new language should be hindered from demonstrating their knowledge in math. However, that is what my students are encountering. Since our school is a STEAM school, all students have laptops to use while at school. If I put assessments in our learning management system, I can record myself reading the test and this allows the students to feel individually served. Since students are working at different rates, they could become easily distracted when hearing the person beside them working on a different problem. The headphones would allow them to maintain focus while having their own individual needs met.
Math not only teaches students about equations and numbers, but how to problem solve in the real world. Our 91.8% poverty rate has left many of them questioning how far they can reasonably go in life. I am unwilling to let them doubt their futures and am committed to providing every student with the best education possible. Education is the only way out of the poverty cycle.
