Having two systems control the temperature in our math class would bring us closer to reaching Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. Our students have enough to worry about in the area of feeling supported, fed well and aspirations of the future. If one has a room that is fully temperature controlled, then one can focus on the task at hand not the need for more or less layers. The presence of two air conditioning systems in our classroom would enable us to have more sustained classroom instruction. Countless times this year alone, scholars have had to step outside into the hallway for a few minutes of cool air. The times when the heat is unbearable, the class transfers outside to sit on concrete or the black top. This is in the midst of other classes outside playing and having recess. The ability to have air conditioning would also help to maintain an increase in health standards. Quite a few scholars have allergies or colds at this time. The current temperature inside our room averages into the low 80's even with the window open. The flow of contaminants ( ie. pollen, smoke and etc.) can be greatly reduced with closed windows. The advent of flu season is upon us and maintaining a temperature controlled environment would keep the spread of viruses at a minimum.
