Many of my students do not have books at home, and many are unable to travel to the local library. Also, they do not have not access to a computer or have internet capability at home, so they are not able to read on-line books. I want to encourage a love of books and reading. I want my students to have access to a library of books in my classroom that they can borrow from throughout the school year. They can bring these books home to read. Exposure to reading is important in developing vocabulary for fluency and comprehension. Students who scored 90% better than their peers on reading tests, read for more than 20 minutes a day – exposing them to 1.8 million words a year.
