"To know where we're going, we have to know where we've been." My 7th and 8th grade history students know that to prepare themselves for their future, to get to college, and to be successful, they must do well in school. At our low-income, high-needs California public school, my students hear daily about the importance of their education and its key to improving their lives. However, they receive few concrete strategies to make the goal of college a reality. One of the ways our history classroom has made the college message concrete is our slogan: "I know where I'm going; I know where I've been." To move forward toward college, we must study history in school. This also helps us extend our study of history into the community; in order to be active participants in the world, we have to know what has made the world the way it is.
