"Sit still!" "Stop moving!" "Stay in your seat!" These are phrases that are heard in many classrooms today. Children are expected to sit in one seat for hours at a time even though research says movement helps learning and focus. My special education students have a variety of disabilities that make sitting still extremely difficult. Traditional chairs do not allow for much movement and often become dangerous when students attempt to rock back and forth or wiggle in them. I want to free my students of the expectation to sit still by giving them flexible seating options. The wobble chairs will be used at my small group table where I often provide small group or one to one instruction. Students will be able to wobble around safely while learning and sharpening their focus. The bean bag chairs and padded seats will be used in our reading and independent work corner as well as our calm down corner. In these areas, students will feel comfortable and be able to strengthen their reading and independent work stamina. Help me transform my classroom one chair at a time. My students and I would love to make this dream a reality.
