My upperclassmen are in need of quality nonfiction books that will help them understand our world. This set of books would allow each student to have a copy of the book, while we navigate learning in a virtual setting. Students will read the book as a class and discuss the book together with the teacher acting as a facilitator. We will focus on analyzing how Stevenson delivers his message and why his message is timely. I think that by reading Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy, my students may begin to deepen their understanding of the devastating effects of systemic racism. Stevenson's story is profound and is important in understanding how inequality exists in systems with which many of us are unfamiliar, like the prison system. Many young people read books that only reflect their own world, and Stevenson pulls back the curtain to reveal the tragedy of being accused and convicted of crimes one did not commit. He shows us the cold prison system and the terrifying idea that some people should never have been in there in the first place. I believe that students will learn empathy and compassion when confronted with Stevenson's work.
