When students spend time with teachers that show them new experiences doing something challenging and rewarding, those skills transfer into the classroom to help them be comfortable, confident, learners. At my school students excel when they gain confidence and personal relationships with teachers. I teach archery and fly fishing classes on Fridays, where we actually shoot and fish. I have personally seen how these recreational activities teach students patience, persistence, accuracy, and even ecological studies! Our school has participated in the NASP (National Archery in School Program) for three years and during that time over 200 students have participated. One student that had never shot archery before, practiced and did so well that he placed 1st in senior 12 grade boys at the state competition and beat 1,200 students! To say he gained a new found confidence is an understatement, and those skill have helped him over come his severe social anxiety. We have recently been getting low on arrows and the rests break often as we shoot every Friday for 90 minutes. Arrows are constantly being damaged especially as the kids get to be better shots, because their arrows will hit the other ones that are stuck in the target. Also, we fish on local ponds that require gear replacement and one more rod would allow more kids to take the class or give us extra equipment in case of malfunction. We really need gear to help our students learn these invaluable skills! Thank you!
