Allowing students to get out of their desks and sit in some comfortable chairs will provide them with an example of thinking outside the box and hopefully get them to do the same. I really encourage my students to be creative, work hard, and collaborate, and I want the physical space to reflect that. I'm inspired by work places like Google or art lofts where entrepreneurs can rent spaces to do business. A high school classroom should not be so cookie cutter. I really want my students to have skills that are marketable, like teamwork, communication, and problem solving. Having a coffee shop vibe with bean bag chairs, ottomans and unique lighting in my classroom will encourage my high schoolers to be relaxed, but also to see that learning and working hard can happen in an alternative environment. We regularly do simulations, debates, and creative projects that reflect history and current events. Having a space more similar to graphic design departments and creative corporate work places will prepare my students to feel at home with taking risks.
