My 5th graders explore the elements that writers use to create pieces of strong and meaningful literature. They analyze examples of literature of all genres and styles, a major one being graphic novels. Through analysis of graphic novels, students learn how to properly identify and utilize visual elements and dialogue to create narratives, present information and engage readers in their own graphic novels. Students become more thoughtful in their use of scene framing, dialogue and detail as they create their graphic novels, which translates into vivid description in their writing. This project would purchase set of graphic novels for my students, providing them with the opportunity to meaningfully learn from high quality, engaging texts!
