When my fifth graders walk into the room in the morning, the first thing they see is a poster that states, "No act of kindness now matter how small is ever wasted." The Choose Kind message and ideology has been the main theme and message in my classroom for many years. RJ Palacio writes about a character names August Pullman who looks different than most 5th grade students. Her novel teaches students to not, "judge a boy by his face," but their actions and how they treat others. This book touches on major themes of family, love, acceptance, bullying, kindness, and loss. While reading this novel my students will have opportunities to collaborate and discuss many of these same issues that they will face during the middle school and high school years. In addition, students will design and implement their own Choose Kind project within their own community. The Wonder of Wonder will not only help to build character education, but allow the students to witness the power of choosing kind first hand!
