Brain research also confirms that physical activity – moving, stretching, and walking – can actually enhance the learning process. I constantly have my students moving around the room, giving them the opportunity to work where they would like, yet our current options are not always comfortable. We know that when people are uncomfortable, they are distracted. I am hoping to be able to buy comfortable, flexible seating options for my students. Including a beanbag chair, wobble chairs, and a few stability cushions. Flexible seating in a student-centered classroom gives children a voice in their learning. It offers them choice and ownership over their work. My students currently love to sit on the carpet, even on the tile floor! The flexible learning environment supports different learning styles and different learning needs. I have students with learning disabilities, including ADHD, so giving them a seat to help get their fidgeting out will help them focus on learning.
