One of the essential questions of my English class is: What can the stories we read teach us about ourselves and our place in the world. This question drives our work in every literature unit and with good reason. I teach in a high school context and students at this time are on their personal journeys of figuring out who they are and who they want to be. Part of this process is unlearning the negative messaging that so often targets teens in mass popular media. Our next unit will focus on the heroes journey and quest to fulfill the vision we hold for ourselves. One of the central texts, which we do not have available at our school, will be The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.
Your contribution to purchasing this powerful and culturally relevant text would aid in developing a mindset of self-love, self- discovery, and self-awareness that is so crucial to our adolescents and our curriculum at this level. This project sets out to provide each of my students with a copy of this text. The themes and messages of this book will expand on the concepts of the unit. It is important that each student have a copy in order to support the literacy skills of active reading, summarizing, and synthesizing ideas.
