To optimize twenty-first-century teaching methods such as project-based learning and personalized instruction, space should be adaptable to allow multiple learning activities to occur simultaneously. Learner-centered classrooms should be designed to accommodate different teaching and learning formats, including: individual study and reflection, one-on-one instruction, peer-to-peer discussion, small-group work, teacher-directed instruction, and student presentation. A flexible classroom is fundamental to an instructor’s ability to adapt to various needs. Tall tables allow students to stand, low soft surfaces encourage comfort and creativity, large tables provide space to artwork and group collaboration. The redesign of my classroom will allow a maximum of 26 students flexible learning and seating options.
