My students currently attend high school at an open enrollment charter school in Louisiana. All of my students have significant developmental and cognitive disabilities. Their academic skills are near a first grade level, which means their years of high school are critically important as these are the final years they will benefit from state-funded education to build their current skills set. This also means that great focus must be placed on building functional skills, such as those necessary for independent living, community involvement, and healthy interpersonal relationships.
