Placing important pieces of literature in our students' hands is critical. In English, we want to ensure that students are not only meeting their reading goals, but also accessing books that reinforce powerful messages. Lord of the Flies is a classic text for a reason; its central themes of individuality vs the common good and morality vs power resonate as much in 2016 as when it was written half a century ago. My students will love this book, and its challenging ideas will push them as thinkers, readers, and writers. As a new school, we need to purchase all materials for the first time. We want to ensure that even with a limited budget we are able to provide kids with the same experience they would have if they were attending a fully grown school. Providing each student with their own copy of the Lord of the Flies ensures that they can enjoy the book more fully and at their own pace.
