In my class we cover the history of Michigan, in past years I have created a pretty great curriculum, but its missing a few things. One of those things is an enjoyable reading project. This book that I am requesting is a great, interesting, and educational true story on murder of a young boy in Benton Harbor in 1991. This book also illustrates the differences in the environments of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, two cities separated by a river in southwest Michigan. This book will be an enjoyable, and educational account of Michigan history. In history class we examine human geography. We look at how people's environment affects their lifestyle, and can influence a community. This book highlights the differences of two polar opposite cities in examining St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. While St. Joseph is predominately white and affluent, Benton Harbor is predominately African-American, and most citizens fall below the poverty line. Themes covered in this book, are issues we still are learning from today including racism, poverty, and civilian relationships with law enforcement. This story encapsulates human geography, and does so no more than twenty minutes from our school! My students are excited and eager to learn our states history. This year I have a talented and intelligent group that is capable of going beyond the call of duty. I would love my students to read this book, and be able to provide them with a great enrichment assignment.
