One of the number one problems I have in the high school classroom is students not being able to focus. When I borrowed 4 stability balls from a colleague and let students test them out, my students and I discovered that wobbling on the balls really reduced their issues with distraction. High school students, unless required by the school, hardly ever get chances to be active in class. Empowering them to feel free to wiggle and fidget not only helps them focus but it also decreases disciplinary issues. I would like my students to have a variety of tools available to allow them to pick the fidgeting apparatus that suits them best. The stability balls and fidgeting toys will empower them to make choices that let them learn in a way that embraces their energy instead of stifling it.
